Finding sound

September 13th, 2010 by Juan

At the edge of finishing up “The Moops Physix”, we got to the point where the absolute silence of moopsy nothingness was very disruptive to the feeling of the game. It was time to put some sound in space and we started an experiment with the local music & sound FX people. Argentina is filled with lots of great musical talent, some newborn studios and freelancers and it’s very hard to choose one for a project without really knowing them.

In our first attempt at getting somebody to make the game sound like we imagined, we gave some guidelines to a lot of candidates. The response was amazing, we got some very cool demo soundtracks, very different one from another, but no one reflecting what we had in mind. Of course, the mistake was on our side and we went for a different approach in the second round.

This time we approached the candidates asking for any kind of soundtrack, we showed the game and let them come up with whatever they thought was the best for it. And this time we got it right, Guillermo Crespi sent a theme that rocked Moops out.

Not only we got a soundtrack that fits perfectly with the mood of the game (and lifted it!), but also a lot of amazing, very different demos from very talented people showing what they can do given freedom to do so.
The game is better now thanks to the soundtrack, and we got to know what other musicians can do for future projects. Thanks to this, the search for sounds to our next project will be much easier.

These are the people who helped us find the perfect sound for “The Moops Physix”. Thanks to everyone!

Great post. On our previous proyects (wich ammount to 2) , we used to hunt for music ourselves, it was a slow and tedious process.

For our next game we wanted to hire a professional, your post is of great help!

    Keep it up :)

We put a lot of care into the sound for our games. In fact we just put up a devblog about implementation methods and strategies you might be interested in.
